PROVIDENCE, RI (Winter 2009)-- The Rhode Island International Film Festival (RIIFF) is proud to present its fourth annual Roving Eye Documentary Film Festival™. This unique sidebar festival celebrates international documentary filmmaking and taks place at Roger Williams University. A selection of short and feature documentaries will be shown and all screenings, unless otherwise noted, will be free of charge and open to the public.

“The idea behind this Festival came out of a desire to provide another platform to showcase the work of independent filmmakers. Each year, RIIFF receives over 3,000 entries and while the Festival does screen more films than any other Festival in New England during its six day run—291 in 2008—many excellent films are not screened,” stated Adam Short, Producing Director and creator of the Roving Eye Documentary Festival™.

secret“Roving Eye is an important part of our mission as a film festival: our goal is to bring the best in independent international cinema to the communities of Rhode Island,” said George T. Marshall, Executive Director/CEO of RIIFF. “Roving Eye is an opportunity to screen great documentary films and we are very excited to be putting this festival together and making this work available to the broadest possible audience in our region.

“We have always seen film as more than an entertainment medium, and with our non-profit mission encompassing education, arts and culture, providing this work through partner locations across the state helps us achieve our goals.”

According to Mr. Short, the Roving Eye Festival was built because, “We’ve seen a great deal of support and interest in our film festival from the various communities around the state.  This is a wonderful opportunity to do what we do best as an organization and to help build awareness among Rhode Islanders about events that are going on in the world around us.”

The Roving Eye Documentary Film Festival™ and its programs have been sponsored in part by grants and underwriting from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, the Flickers Arts Collaborative, and the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities; event partners include The US-China Institute at Bryant University, the Guangzhou Documentary Film Festival, Roger Williams University, the Providence Public Library, the Westerly Public Library, the Clark Memorial Library, and the Warwick Museum of Art; corporate support from WJAR TV 10, Clear Channel Communications, New England Entertainment Digest, Columbus Theatre Arts Center, and private contributions.
